UVM rookie Apfeld sidelined

University of Vermont men’s basketball player Luke Apfeld appears sidelined for his rookie season after tearing his ACL this week, Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports is reporting on Twitter.

UVM is tight-lipped about injuries. Head coach Mike Lonergan said he is not allowed to comment on his players’  injuries; today after practice, he referred all inquiries to head athletic trainer Allison Shepherd.

Shepherd released the following statement today: “Luke Apfeld sustained a knee injury earlier this week. Diagnostic tests are being done to confirm the specific nature of the injury. He is out indefinitely.”

This would mark the third ACL injury in 16 months for Apfeld, a 6-foot-8 forward from Wolfeboro, N.H., who had been wearing a knee brace during preseason games and practices. UVM sports information associate Ben Dickie said today Apfeld won’t play in the Catamounts’ preseason scrimmage against St. Michael’s on Saturday and more information will likely be released early next week.

Stay tuned.
